Located in the Pyrénnes Orientales Department, Cassagnes and Belesta are two small villages whose history has always been linked to agriculture and moreover vine growing. Before Roussillon became french in 1660, these two villages were part of the kingdom of France. Bélesta was at that time on the very border with Spain. These two villages have now a population of just over 200 inhabitants each, but the "Cassagnols" and "Bélestrucs" are proud to produce some high quality wine which bear the name of their villages accross the world. The Cassagnes-Belesta wine coop is the result of a merger between the two winegrowers' cooperative in 1995. Sixty wine growers are cultivating some 375 hectares (937,5 acres). 90 % of the crop depends on 20 % of the wine growers |
